Sport as a war-The Racial politics of football

Introduction

The 2006 Football World Cup offers a timely opportunity to consider the wider social and political implications of sport in general and football in particular, with particular reference to the racial dimension to sporting competition. Now of course, Dr Frances Cress-Welsing in her much acclaimed book, 'The Isis Papers' (1991), provided an in-depth psychological analysis of the racial/sexual symbolism of a variety of sports. Similarly, Abdullah Nazir Uhuru in his excellent book 'Killing "Me" $oftly' (2005), provides an insightful analysis of football, drawing upon Cress-Welsing's work. The aim of this essay is to build upon these works and also to assist Afrikans to understand that, life is politics and everything in life is political, therefore sport has a politicised and racialised dimension to it, just like all other forms of people activity.

We are at War

If viewed from the narrow perspective promulgated by 'the West', war involves military conflict between nations. However a more holistic definition of war would be:

"any sustained aggressive action by one identifiable group, be it national, racial, ethnic, religious, socio-economic etc. against another similarly identifiable group where the aim is to cause significant harm - be it physical, psychological, emotional or spiritual - to the other group over a sustained period of time." (Grant 2006)

According to this definition; Caucasians have been waging a racial war against Afrikans for over three thousand years (and we should not forget their cousins the Arabs). This war manifests itself in different ways, for example the physical war is not just confined to overt physical violence but also includes acts designed to directly attack the physical health of Afrikans e.g. the use of medicines banned from use in 'the West' in Afrika, the whole HIV/AIDS scenario and the deliberate and concerted attempts to reduce Afrikan fertility worldwide, of which it forms a part, being examples of European aggression.

One of the most important tactics in war is what is described as 'Psych Ops' or Psychological Operations. It has been well established that propaganda is crucial in warfare, even during overt military conflict, and the creation and dissemination of propaganda is a crucial component of psychological operations. The purpose of psychological operations is to weaken or destroy the enemy's will to fight and resist, or crucially - particularly with respect to Afrikans - convince the enemy that in fact there is no war taking place and that his/her goals and aspirations coincide with and are in harmony with that of the propagandist.

Sport as War

Sport is used as an expression of national pride and prowess on an ongoing basis, but particularly at times of collective national anxiety. In this context team sports become more crucial than individual sports from a nationalistic perspective, particularly when the team is representing the nation as opposed to a club. From a racial perspective; individual sporting encounters can have great psychological significance, particularly when they take place in highly combative sports e.g. boxing.

During the so-called 'Cold War' the Olympic medal table was a source of fierce competition between the US and the Soviet Union (White Russian Empire) and the GDR (German Democratic Republic). This desperate desire to top the medal table was the catalyst for the proliferation of the use of performance enhancing drugs by both the US (using a 'free market' capitalist methodology) and the Eastern bloc nations (using a state controlled methodology).

Nations have even gone to war over the outcome of sporting contests. I believe it was the result of a World Cup qualifier in the 1970's that led to a military conflict between Honduras and Ecuador.

When you add in the element of 'race' the psychological concoction becomes potent. We need to understand that in the conflict between global Europe and global Afrika Caucasians are defending and promoting a psychological position which says:

'We are the most evolved and human of all peoples/races. It is our destiny to rule the Earth and everything above and beneath it. We will do anything that is required to maintain our dominant hegemonic position, including acts of genocide. Afrikans are in the position they occupy (economically, educationally, militarily, healthwise etc.) because of their inferiority (genetic and cultural) and the benefits of European intervention in Afrika (despite any past wrongdoings) have outweighed any detriment caused.'

Now, the Afrikan position is generally confused and whilst it should be built around the position that:

'Europeans have proven themselves utterly ruthless, untrustworthy, imperialistic, racist and intent upon world domination. Since they will not and cannot accept the equitable sharing of the Earth's resources in line with the population sizes and needs of different groups of people on Earth they must be confronted and defeated by us. History has taught us that we cannot rely upon any other group of people to come to our aid.'

It is in fact more often based around the belief that:

'We are all people and through our suffering we hope to show all people the meaning of true humanity. We should forgive Europeans for their past errors and should not affront them by seeking redress/reparations for past wrongs. We hope that over time Europeans will accept us as their equals and whenever and wherever we live as a minority amongst them our priority should be to integrate and gain acceptance from Whites.'

This latter Afrikan position is a recipe for degradation, defeat and elimination and is based upon Afrikan xenophilia (at one and the same time our greatest strength and weakness) and the inferiority complex that most Afrikans now possess.

These very different psychological positions determine the collective or dominant, comparative; European and Afrikan responses to all aspects of people activity, including sport. Whereas Europeans have developed a whole lexicon of words and phrases which bring together the psychology of war/killing/violence and sport e.g. 'killer instinct', 'finish them off', 'hammer blow', 'sucker punch', 'kill off the opposition/game' to describe events, even in non-violent sports, Afrikans do nothing more than mimic this aggressive approach to sport having no indigenous cultural reservoir of such extreme sporting hostility to tap into. One of the most famous quotes in British sport came from Bill Shankley, a former manager of Liverpool football club. When asked about the significance of football, Shankley said,

"It is not a matter of life and death. It is more important than that."

For Europeans, it is and always has been more than just a game. It is war on a pitch, track, court, or on whatever playing area the sport is contested.

The significance of football

Association Football is the most popular sport in the world. It is played in every country in the world and almost every country in the world has a national team. Given this situation; football generates a huge amount of domestic and international media coverage and success becomes the source of a great deal of national pride. It was even reported that a ceasefire was called to the civil war in the Ivory Coast for the duration of that country's participation in the 2006 World Cup. Team sports are seen to represent a nation's culture and character far more than individual sport and therefore as the most popular sport in the world the way a national team plays football is presented as telling the viewer a lot about who and what that nation is like, their strengths and virtues, weaknesses and vices.

Therefore, when watching football; even the alert novice will notice that Afrikan teams - as well as individual Afrikans playing for majority Caucasian nations and clubs - are characterised according to enduring negative Caucasian racial stereotypes i.e. physically strong, fast, athletic, naïve, exuberant, brutal, whilst lacking in tactical awareness, finesse and thinking skills. It is presented as brains vs brawn when European confronts Afrikan.

The media discussion around Tiger Woods epitomises this profound negative racial stereotyping of Afrikans. Tiger Woods' ability to drive a golf ball long distances has consistently been ascribed to his explosive attributes stemming from his Afrikan genetic ancestry inherited from his father. On the other hand his mental strength, ability to focus and perform under pressure is just as invariably attributed to his Oriental genetic ancestry inherited from his Thai mother. This is despite the fact that his father has played the major role in developing his golfing talent and is on record as stating that he used the psychological techniques he learned as a soldier in the US army to help develop his son's mental strength.

When Portugal played Angola in the 2006 World Cup, great play was made of the fact that Portugal ruled Angola until 1975, however this was not presented in a negative light from either perspective and the commentators were quick to note how they had found groups of supporters from each country who mingled together and said that their nations were 'brothers'. Of course you can always find slave minded Afrikans if you try and it just shows you how the mind can come to rationalise an abusive relationship. This inferiority complex, which is one of the real factors retarding the development of Afrikan football is manifested in the number of high profile continental Afrikan footballers - particularly star players - sporting ghastly chemically straightened and/or dyed hair.

The Ivory Coast team at the 2006 World Cup was a good example with their star striker Didier Drogba parading his greasy, chemically straightened hairdo along with another teammate, apparently using a different formulation, whose hair was simply stiff and dry and a third teammate whose hair, worn in china bumps, was dyed a bizarre shade of grey and purple. The sad desire to attain European hair texture and the desire for and attainment of European women as success symbols by Afrikan footballers are simply manifestations of the deep-seated self-loathing that prevents Afrikan teams from looking the top Caucasian nations squarely in the eye and truly believing that they can win consistently. How can you overcome those whom you believe to be your superiors and whose approval you desperately crave? Indeed despite his Europeanised hairdo and mind; Drogba has been the target of fierce criticism in England for his extreme - although not unique - diving and feigning of injury.

There are in fact three key determining criteria for success in the football World Cup. These are:

1. Wealth of the nation,

2. Long footballing tradition,

3. Population size.

To be successful, countries almost invariably need to meet at least two of these criteria. In fact these are key factors for most international team sports and for nations climbing the Olympic medal table.

Ethnic cleansing in action - The England and Netherlands football teams

In my first two books 'Niggers, Negroes, Black People and Afrikans' (2003) and 'Blue Skies for Afrikans' (2005) I provided an in-depth analysis of the process of cultural and biological assimilation taking place in the UK, Brazil, Australia and other locations around the world. I set out six steps to Whiteness, which can be briefly summarised as:

Stage 1 - Initial contact

Stage 2 - First a trickle then a flood

Stage 3 - The Dam breaks - The coffee coloured dream

Stage 4 - The Silent Elimination Begins - Rise of the Near Whites

Stage 5 - Decline of Mixed Race people, Death of Afrikans

Stage 6 - Death of Mixed Race people and Absorption of Near Whites

As suggested above, this process on the one hand involves biological assimilation through miscegenation and on the other hand cultural assimilation through social psychological processes and techniques leading to dramatic changes in the social values of the target group.

Sport reflects both the biological and cultural transformation of the target group (in this case us) as well as reinforcing the prevailing racial hierarchy. Most of you will be familiar with the well worn adage:

If you're White that's right,

If you're Yellow you're mellow,

If you're Brown stick around,

If you're Black step back.

And all the structures, systems and processes of the social, political, economic, educational, religious etc. institutions of Caucasians are designed to reinforce and maintain this racial hierarchy. Football is no exception and provides very clear, tangible examples for Afrikans who have awoken from our collective cultural coma.

The 2006 World Cup has provided some very stark examples. Let us firstly examine the England football team. Since Viv Anderson became the first Black man to be selected for the full England team in 1978 there has been a trend of increasing numbers of Afrikans selected to represent England at football. Viv Anderson like other Afrikans achieving sporting 'firsts' was selected as much for his docile, Uncle Tom personality as for his undoubted footballing talent. There were other Black footballers who were worthy of consideration at this time and similarly; in baseball, Jackie Robinson was selected as the first Afrikan to play major league baseball because of his combination of talent and docility. He knew his place in White society and was willing to accept the many racial insults and slights from his White team mates and others in order to be 'accepted'. In fact Jackie Robinson should not have been the first. There was an Afrikan from Cuba who was selected to join a major league baseball team, however he was discarded after he punched down a team mate who insulted him.

There has been a trend in English football whereby it has proved far easier for Black footballers to be selected for the England squad as opposed to actually making the starting line-up. As Abdullah Uhuru (2005) has eloquently described; the key central positions: centre half, central midfield and the highly coveted striker positions have proven most difficult for Afrikans to secure, since they comprise the 'spine' of the team (with only the least glamorous centre half positions regularly coming into Afrikan possession), whereas the more peripheral wide positions have always been made more available to Afrikan players at all levels.

The 2006 World Cup has marked a sea change in the fortunes of Afrikans footballers with regard to the England football team. The composition of the 23 player squad reflects both the individual racism of the England manager, Sven Goran-Erickson, the collective racism of English football and the huge growth in miscegenation involving Afrikan-Caribbeans over the past thirty years. Erickson selected one Afrikan player (Sol Campbell) for his squad and five Dual Heritage players (Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Aaron Lennan, Jermaine Jenas and Theo Walcott). Two of the Dual Heritage players (Ferdinand and Cole) form part of Erickson's preferred first eleven. Erickson's selection reflects the racial hierarchy of White, Brown, Black with the omission of two Afrikan players (Darren Bent and Jermaine Defoe) from the World Cup squad and the inclusion of one Dual Heritage player (Theo Walcott) being absolutely inexplicable.

When behaviour cannot be explained on rational grounds then one needs to consider irrational explanations. Racism is irrational behaviour and provides the best explanation, not only for the selection of the England 2006 squad, but also for patterns of team selection throughout English football at club and national level, right down to schoolboy football.

We need to be clear that this is not an attack on Dual heritage footballers. They have no more control over - or understanding of - White Racism than Afrikan footballers and are simply trying to pursue their chosen profession. On the other hand this recognition should not cause us to shy away from the reality described above which also includes the fact that lighter skinned Afrikans will be treated preferentially to darker skinned Afrikans unless they demonstrate some degree of race consciousness, in which case all bets are off.

If we move on to considering the Dutch national team; we see the same scenario. Holland have taken to the field in the World Cup with an all Caucasian starting eleven for the first time in many years. It has not been uncommon in the recent past for the Netherlands to field a national team with five or six Afrikans in the starting line up, however the new Dutch manager Marco Van Basten decided he would clear out the old (Afrikan) guard and bring in new (Caucasian) talent. What is interesting is that he has kept some older experienced players in his team such as Edwin Van der Saar and Philip Cocu and they are all as old, or older, than the discarded Afrikans and are all Caucasian. Van Basten's team selection is reflective of the backlash against Afrikans and non-White Muslims in the Netherlands and symbolically reflects the desire of the White Dutch to assert European culture and values. This 'clash of cultures' was brought to a head in the Netherlands by the murders of a homosexual right wing politician, Pim Fortan, and a 'radical' film-maker by two different Muslim men.

The racial slight in the Dutch squad selection was so stark that an Afrikan recent Dutch international player, Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbank, noted how Dutch managers always blame the Afrikan players when things go wrong for the national team. These racial disputes go back many years and in the lead up to the 1996 European Championships there was a huge falling out between the Caucasian manager and the Afrikan players which ultimately led to a dismal performance by the Dutch team as team morale disintegrated.

Similarly, in England we see the growth in English nationalism - which can be traced to Scottish and Welsh devolution and first made itself visible in a sporting context at the 1996 European Championships - leaving Afrikan footballers out in the cold, even though virtually all of them are assimilated Negroes with only one Afrikan Premiership footballer, Andrew Cole, having an Afrikan wife/partner.

Conclusion

We are at war, but only one side is fighting. Caucasians are; and always have been, an extremely warlike people. Sports such as boxing, American football and rugby reflect the strong European cultural desire for modern gladiatorial combat. Sport is war without the killing. The desire for the maintenance of the racial equation White/Black = White Power and the reality of the other sociological equation White + Black = Racial Conflict means that all areas of human activity are racialised and until Afrikans snap out of our collective waking coma we will continue to be defeated in a game we don't even realise is taking place let alone know the rules.

Since most professional sportsmen are Negrotised I shall be cheering on the teams with the greatest number of Afrikans during the 2006 World Cup whilst keeping the relative unimportance of twenty two men chasing a leather ball around for ninety minutes in context.

Up you might 'Race'!

Not to long ago black footballers in the United Kingdom were frequently faced with monkey chants from the terraces and racial abuse from their opponents. Now the problem seems to have been mostly eradicated from the British game and it is not unusual to have a back player in the football league (approximately 25% of professional players are of black origin). The problem might have crept out of the British game but a series of incidents over the past decade throughout Europe suggests the problem is still rife in mainland Europe.

During the 1970s and 1980s in the British Isles footballers from different ethnic backgrounds were abused regularly from members of the crowd making monkey chants, singing racist or anti-semitic songs and also chants closely linked to patriotism. It is believed that this was all linked to far-right groups who seemed to be using football matches to recruit new members and to hand out literature.

Far-right groups like the National Front (NF) used their magazine 'Bulldog' to promote competitions amongst fans like for the title of 'most racist ground in Britain'. Copies of 'Bulldog' were openly sold at grounds across the country and clubs like Chelsea, Leeds United, Milwall, Newcastle United, Arsenal and West Ham were seen to have strong fascist elements. After the Heysel stadium disaster in the 1980s, British National Party leaflets were found on the terraces!

During the 1990s the British government introduced measures to combat racism in football alongside footballs governing bodies as well as at club level, supporter level and organisations like Kick Racism out of Football. The 1990s saw a massive decline in racism in the British game and now football fans will hardly ever hear racist abuse at football stadiums in Britain.

The British authorities and various other parties seem to have grasped hold of the problem and helped to eradicate the minority who use football as a tool to vent racism, but the same can not be said for other European nations. The problem of racism in mainland Europe is being described by some as 'endemic'. It seems as though some football federations are in denial of the problem even though players, fans and ethnic minorities are abused regularly.

Just like the National Front used to target football grounds in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, neo-nazi and neo-fascist groups are now targeting football grounds around Europe for recruitment. The worst affected clubs are Lazio and Verona in Italy, PSG in France and Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid in Spain. A series of incidents in Southern Europe has highlighted this over the past few years.

In November, 2004, Spain entertained England in a friendly match at the Bernabeu in Madrid. The fact that England were outclassed by Spain and lost the match 1-0 seems to have been forgotten for different reasons. Thousands of Spanish fans in the stadium appeared to be neanderthal in their racist chanting as they were making monkey noises every time second half substitute Shaun Wright-Philips touched the ball. The chanting was clearly heard by millions of English fans sat watching the match on the BBC and the commentators condemned the chanting and stated there was no need of it in the modern game.

In response to this incident the British Sports Minister (Richard Carbon) wrote to his Spanish counterpart insisting that some action be taken. The English FA were already preparing to write to FIFA and UEFA in the aftermath of the under-21 encounter between the two nations when Glenn Johnson, Darren Bent and Carlton Cole were the targets of racist chanting.

The British media blamed Spanish coach Luis Aragones for the incident as prior to the match a Spanish TV crew filmed him trying to motivate Jose Antonio Reyes by making racist references to his team-mate, Thierry Henry. He used the phrase "Demeustra que eres major que ese negro de mierda", which translates in English "Show that you're better than that shitty black guy".

The Spanish FA declined to take any action, but after an investigation UEFA fined the federation $87,000 and warned that any future incidents would be punished more severely (like suspension from major international tournaments or playing behind closed doors).

A few years later football in Spain was in the media again for the wrong reasons. In February 2006, Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o suffered from racially-driven verbal abuse by fans of Real Zaragoza. During the match fans began making monkey-like chants whenever he had possession of the ball and peanuts were hurled onto the pitch. Eto'o threatened to leave the pitch in protest but his team mates calmed him down. Barcelona won the match 4-1 and Eto'o danced like a monkey when he scored stating he did it as rival fans were treating him like a monkey. Surprisingly referee Fernando Carmona Mendez did not mention the incidents in his match report.

Real Zaragoza were only fined a measly 600 Euros by the Spanish FA and several other clubs were also fined during the course of the season for similar incidents. Atheltico Madrid were fined 6000 Euros for racial abuse of Espanyol's Cameroon goalkeeper Carlo Kameni and Deportivo La Coruna, Albacete and Getafe received fines for similar incidents

A similar incident to the Eto'o one happened in Italy with Ivorian defender Marc Zoro. The Messina defender threatened to halt a Serie A game after suffering racial abuse from the visiting Inter Milan supporters. It is also well know that fans of Italy's capital club, Lazio, have supporters who have strong fascist views. Ex Lazio player Paolo Di Canio landed himself in trouble for making the fascist salute to the Lazio fans after scoring in the Rome derby.

In Paris the Mayor is worried about the cities image due to recent events at Paris SG's stadium, the Parc de Princes, as racism has become increasingly common with insults and monkey chants directed at black players. Far-right gangs have also looked to fight black and Arab members of rival gangs at the stadium during games. When Israeli side Hapoel Tel Avis visited for a UEFA Cup match in November 2006, a plains clothes police officer shot into a crowd of skirmishing football fans as he tired to protect a Hapoel Tel Aviv supporter, killing one person in the process. This incident is thought to have resulted from Paris SG fans chanting anti-semitism songs during their sides 4-2 defeat

In Central and Eastern Europe problems of racism and anti-semitism still exist. During England's Euro 2004 qualifier in Slovakia their black players suffered racist abuse from the crowd which highlighted the countries problem to the international media. However, the problem existed long before England's visit. Players from black ethnic backgrounds playing their trade in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania are subject to monkey chanting and being pelted with bananas every week.

In October, 2006, when Blackburn Rovers visited Krakow in Poland for a UEFA Cup tie, Benni McCarthy claimed he was abused by Wisla Krakow defender Nikola Mijailovic. The English FA wrote a letter to UEFA to ask them to investigate the allegations of racism whilst Wisla claimed they had already investigated the incident and found nothing to substantiate the claim. The referee also failed to mention the incident in his report but UEFA took action against the player and banned him for five games.

One nation in Central Europe you will be surprised to hear is suffering from racism is Germany. A series of events of the past year have highlighted the problem to the world's media. When striker Patrick Owomoyela was being considered for the German 2006 World Cup squad, he was branded as 'non-German' by an extreme right party and another German player, Gerald Asamoah, was subject to abuse in a Cup tie in Rostock. During Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia, in Bratislava, German fans sang discriminatory songs. German fans were again in the sport light when fans of Alemannia Aachen chanted racist abuse directed against asylum seekers. The German FA fined the club a measly 50,000 Euros.

It seems as though racism is still rife in European football and the problem looks as though it is not going to go away overnight or be brushed under the carpet easily. European footballs governing body needs to take firmer action against fans of clubs who are guilty and the clubs respective national football federation need to back their ruling up. Perhaps certain European countries should look at how the British have managed to reduce racism in their grounds as an example on how to tackle racism.

Listen Up: it's football season again!

It starts to get a little chillier outside and the sun goes down earlier. This can only mean one thing. Football season is upon us again. Fulham shaken by Zamora leg break

Bobby ZamoraZamora signed a new four-year contract on Friday Fulham will be without Bobby Zamora for a minimum of four months after the striker England suffered a broken leg in 2-1 victory Saturday in wolves.

Zamora was stretchered off after 28 minutes after a tackle Karl Henry.

On Friday 29 years, who made his England debut against Hungary in August, has signed a new four-year agreement that it maintains in Fulham until 2014.

"He broke his leg just above the ankle and is outside of a minimum of four months," said Fulham boss Mark Hughes.

Zamora signed for Fulham's West Ham in July 2008 and, after a difficult first season came to a head during the 2009-10 campaign with its 19 goals helping the London side reach the final of Benfica and finish 12 in Premier League.

"We are hopeful that has not suffered any ligaments, but if he has it could be longer," said Hughes.

"It's a great loss. Win the game for him really."

Fulham came down 1-0 to win at Craven Cottage after two goals from Moussa Dembele.

Hughes nor wolves boss Mick McCarthy made any criticism of Henry tackle in their interviews match.

"It's a shame, but I really don't put the blame on the player. [Henry] is one of those," said Hughes.

"There's always a danger if you get dealt with by the side or behind the legs of the players may get stuck.

Hughes confirms Zamora broken leg

"I didn't think there was any intention to hurt Bobby. you don't expect the circumstances of the injury to be the result of a challenge like this, but it can happen.

"When I was a little disappointed that the arbitrator did not see it as a foul, but there you go".

Captain de Lobos was not reserved for the challenge.

Zamora began the current year in good shape, marking the 2-2 Premier League draw at Blackpool before suffering a thigh injury.

That the injury robbed him a place in England's squad for Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland and he had been a doubt for the game with wolves.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy insisted that his team is not a "dirty" side.

Besides red card of Christophe Berra, they also had five players, but McCarthy said it was "a competitive game".

"We'll keep competing the way we do, we'll try and go to the Spurs and play football bombycinus wonderful and try and beat them and get shot label," he said.

How to create a winner in the youth football, analyzing your last season

Making Changes In Systems in Youth Football

After every season most good youth football coaches try to figure out ways to improve their teams or coaching methods. Most take time to reflect a bit at this time of year on the past season.

Most of us ask ourselves;

Did I do a good job?

Did my team do as well as they should have?

Did we meet our goals as defined before the season started?

Where are areas we didn't do very well in?

What could I have done differently?

Should I be making any changes?

Once that is done, we figure out where our deficiencies were, prioritize the deficiencies as they relate to reaching our goals and then search out solutions to address said deficiencies. I'm not talking about adding in additional football plays, I'm talking about doing an assessment and review of the season.

Here are some things we are doing in 2008:

Changes We Made In The Past

Back in the 90's I coached the only way I had ever known, "I" formation power and option football. We picked up a small shotgun spread package as an augment to our "I" and we ran a simple base 5-3 on defense. We ran the same offense and all the same drills I had run as a youth football player in the late 60's and in the 70's as a High School player. We even did a few of my old College drills for good measure. Unfortunately, our offensive production was always tied directly to the levels of talent we had and often the size of our offensive line.

When we had great talent and some size, we won and won often. When we didn't, we were average or worse. On defense when we started our best 11 on defense and didn't sub on defense, we were usually in most games. But when we did sub to get some of those two way starters a breather or get our weaker kids some snaps, we would struggle. Of course when we played the best teams, we wouldn't do very well.

Insanity

You know what they say about people that do the same thing over and over again, but expect different results don't you? That is often the classical definition of the word "insanity." Unfortunately it seems is if many of our fellow youth football coaches suffer from this player decimating affliction. They keep doing the same old thing year after year while ending up with same frustrating poor or choppy results. In my first few years of coaching youth football, I went through the above post season assessment. My answer was always that I needed better football players as the solution to my problem. My thoughts were that all I needed was a better x player, better y player, kids with more motivation, more size etc etc. It was always the kids fault, I just needed a "good team" and we would do well.

What turned my head away from that "lottery" mindset was that in the league I coached in then, the same teams with the same coaches won year in and year out. Some years these teams had talent, but often the talent levels they had were very average. Within the organizations that were consistently winning, there were specific head coaches within those organizations that always won, no matter what team they took. Humbly, I came to the conclusion that coaching and scheme really mattered in youth football and I needed to make some changes.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds". Wise and humble people make changes to what they do if what they are doing is not yielding the results they want. One would hope that goes for those coaching youth football as well.

Changes We Are Going to Make in 2008

I'm now in the process of doing research to fix areas of deficiency in our program. I'm working to develop better methods of communicating with my coaching staffs. I feel we are not leveraging the talents of each coach as well as we could or utilizing the unique skill set each of our coaches innately has as a human being. I'm looking for answers everywhere; from great coaching legends to the captains and innovators of American Industry. We are also leaning too much on our coordinators to do all the basic reads, adjustments and game planning. There has to be a more effective and efficient way of doing things than we are doing today.

As our organization has matured, we now have a few guys that have some experience under their belts and we are getting a few knowledgeable new guys into the program. We want to use their input where it makes sense while making sure that all our kids are "maxing out" on the unique skill set each of us coaches bring to the table. This is a big change from when we first started and had a lot of skeptical rookie "daddy" coaches. While we probably do a better job of this than most youth football teams, we want to be the best at it, that is our standard. One of the great benefits of speaking at all the Nike and Mega Clinics is I get to sit in on other speakers sessions. I get to see (research) how various successful High School and College teams do things. I've been fortunate to hear coaches like Bobby Bowden, Pete Carroll, Jim Tedford and Les Miles as well as top High School and Lower Division College coaches. Maybe more importantly I get to talk to thousands of youth coaches at these clinics and of course through e-mail as well.

By doing a better job in this area our kids will have a better experience, get better instruction, be better prepared and have more fun. Coaching youth football is about X's and O's but it's also effectively and efficiently communicating with your players and your coaches. This is a neglected area in most programs that should reap big payoffs. I assure you we will figure out how to do it better and share that information with you once we have proven it works and have all the bugs worked out.

Other Big Change Stories

Many coaches look at their goals, do research and come up with alternate solutions to reach those goals. Many of you think of Tom Osborne as "Mr. Option Football". Well that really isn't him at all if you look at his history. He was brought in by Bob Devaney to spice up the passing game of Nebraska in the 1960s. Bob Devaneys Unbalanced T formation running teams of 1967 and 1968 had struggled. Those teams complied back to back 6-4 seasons that included a homecoming day 12-0 loss to lowly Kansas State in a game NU had just 1 first down. Osborne, relying on his prior NFL receiver background, brought in a spread passing attack and "I" formation base running attack and dumped the run 90% of the time T formation.

Spread Passing Attack

Osborne recruited future NFL quarterbacks, Jerry Tagge, Dave Humm and Vince Ferragamo to lead these offenses and NU threw the ball. In 1970 NU was a 50% run 50% pass team, and were split pretty much down the middle from 1969 to the late 70s. NU won National Titles in 1970 and 1971 using this "spread passing" system. Johnny Rodgers even won the Heisman Trophy in 1972 as a receiver at NU. But while Osborne's 1970 and 1971 team had won National Titles (both teams had incredible defenses), his teams in the mid and late 70s were getting beat every year by Oklahoma and often didn't fare well in Bowl Games. While NU's teams were winning 9-10 games every year, that wasn't the goal, the goal was to compete for National Championships.

Change to Option Football

Osborne studied the landscape of college football and in 1980 he decided to make a colossal change to option football by recruiting Fort Worth Texas native Turner Gill. Not only would Gill be NU's first option quarterback, he would be NU's first starting black quarterback. Osborne had done a detailed statistical study of the offensive production of college football and it's correlation to wins. He looked at the kinds of kids he had available locally as well as the type of kids he could recruit nationally and decided to take the then risky plunge into option football.

Change Yields Big Results

In the early 90's Osborne also made huge changes on defense. He went to an attacking 4-3 with smaller and faster players, a huge change from the 50 bend but don't break strategy of the previous 20 years. Most of you know how the story ends, over 250 wins in 25 seasons, 3 more National Titles and named to the College Football Hall of Fame. Would Osborne be where he is today if he hadn't made the big change to option football in 1980? I doubt it and certainly the Nebraska Football legacy would have been a much different one.

While I don't compare to the worst of College coaches, let alone one of the best, we made a similar wholesale change a number of years back. Eight seasons ago I decided to move to the Single Wing Offense and a much different practice methodology, a 180 degree turn from what I knew. We went from having up and down seasons to going 78-5 and consistently winning and retaining nearly all my players. Had I stayed with what I knew before and just recruited or hoped for better players or added a few more football plays, no doubt we would have been suffering with the same up and down results. The kids are better off for it and I know I am too.
